Abstract

The 4th century was not only a period of intense christological discussions within the church, but also recorded as a period in which important events related to the issue of the Holy Spirit took place. The Holy Spirit has been one of the most controversial topics of discussion after the christological debates. The main subject of our research is the Macedonians, the apparent cause of the debates in the second half of the fourth century, when the Holy Spirit came to the fore as an independent issue. We will deal the origin, historical development, leading names and basic thoughts of this group. Our main sources will be the works of the church fathers who witnessed the period when these events took place, even took part in these discussions. We will first start with the name of this group and then conclude our article by dealing with the historical process of Macedonianism and its basic ideas.
