İran’da 8 Mart 1890 tarihinde tütün işletme imtiyazı İngilizlere verildi. Tütün, İran halkı için hem bir geçim kaynağıydı hem de partilerde, kutlamalarda ve seyahatlerde yaygın olarak tüketilmekteydi. Bu sebeple tütün işletme imtiyazının İngilizlere verilmesi İran halkı arasında büyük protestolara sebep oldu. Protestolara katılanlar arasında din adamları, esnaflar ve tüccarlar dışında İranlı kadınlar da vardı. İranlı kadınlar, erkeklerle birlikte Şiraz, Tebriz, Tahran ve Meşhed’deki protestolarda ön sıralarda yer aldılar. Protestocular, bu sırada Nasıreddin Şah’a telgraf göndererek imtiyazın iptal edilmesini istediler. Bu tepkiler neticesinde Nasıreddin Şah, Ocak 1892’de tütün imtiyazını iptal etmek zorunda kaldı.
Bu çalışmanın amacı, tütün imtiyazının İngilizlere verilmesi sürecini ve bu sırada İranlı kadınların üstelendiği rolü kaynaklar ışığında incelemektir.
Tobacco business concession in Iran were granted to the British on March 8, 1890. Tobacco was both a source of income for the Iranian people and was commonly consumed at parties, celebrations, and travel. Accordingly, the granting of tobacco business concession to the British caused great protests among the Iranian people. Apart from clergymen, tradesmen and merchants, there were also Iranian women among those who participated in the protests. Iranian women, along with men, were at the forefront of the protests in Shiraz, Tabriz, Tehran and Mashhad. Meanwhile, the protesters sent a telegram to Nasir al-Din Shah, asking for the concession to be canceled. As a result of these reactions, Nasir al-Din Shah had to cancel the tobacco concession in January 1892.
The aim of this study is to examine the process of granting tobacco concession to the British and meanwhile the role played by Iranian women in the light of sources.
