Abstract

This book attempts to expound the philosophy and life of Karl Marx. In 1835 Karl Marx entered the Univesrsity of Bonn, where he was to study law. A year later Marx transferred to the University of Berlin, where he abondned the study of law for philosophy. İn 1843 he renewed his acquaintance with Frederich Engels, beginning a liflong friendship and collaboration between the two men. It was Engels who in effect intoduced Marx both to the study of political economy and to the British working class movement. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s Marx regularly spent ten hours of every day at the British Museum studying and writing. In 1859 he published Critique of Political Economy. Perhaps even more important was a major book Grundrisse . Marx sketched the whole of Capital between 1863 and 1865, and the first volume was publlished in1867. Throughout his life, Marx remained active in the working class movement. Marx’s principal academic training was in philosophy, but in his mature thought Marx focuses on political economy and the history of capitalism. This book is organized around five themes: politics, capitalism, political economy, labor and workforce, reform and revolution. Throughout the book John Seed will try to explain and defend these beliefs.
