Examination of Risk Factors Predicting Cyber Dating Violence Categories in Youths

Year 2023, Issue: 57, 151 - 176, 01.01.2023

Abstract

Cyber dating violence is a kind of dating violence resulting in both perpetration and victimization of partners with the use of technological tools. The present study aims to examine the risk factors predicting cyber dating violence categories of youths. The study included a total of 470 undergraduate students (311 females and 159 males) from Turkey, aged between 18- 25 years. Data were collected from the participants of the study through self-report scales. Multinominal logistic regression analysis was used to analyze collected data. The findings suggest that the frequency of text messaging (SMS) with date, the frequency of posting a video/photo on social media, the frequency of and competence in using social media, and online social interaction preferences and emotion regulation in problematic internet usage are the risk factors increasing or decreasing probability of perpetration and/or victimization of partners. Based on these findings, understanding the power dynamics in dating relationships may enlighten individuals to have digital dating interactions isolated from violent activities or abusive patterns. The present study suggests developing preventive and intervention strategies in future studies.

https://doi.org/10.9779/pauefd.1090649
