Abstract
Bilim kurgu, toplumsal gerçeklerin kurgusal boyutta tartışılmasını sağlayan edebi bir türdür. 20. yüzyıl sonları ve 21. yüzyıl başlangıcında yazdığı romanlarla tanınan Maggie Gee, bilim kurgu eserlerinde bilimsel ve teknolojik gelişmelerin insan hayatını kolaylaştırırken kötüye kullanıldıklarında sosyo-politik ve ekonomik çatışmalara yol açtıklarını iddia eder. Yazar, The Ice People ve The Flood’ta bilimin ve teknolojinin sağlık, konfor ve zenginlik sağlamayı amaçladığını; fakat bilimsel ve teknolojik araçların kontrolsüz kullanımının hem doğa hem de tüm kesimden insanlar üzerinde yıkıcı etkilere sahip olduğunu iddia eder. Aynı zamanda, bilimsel ve teknolojik açılardan daha gelişmiş ülkelerin daha az gelişmiş ülkeleri ötekileştirmesinin toplumlar arasında uzlaşmazlıklara yol açtığını vurgular. Ayrıca yazar, beyaz erkeklerin kadınlara ve siyah tenli insanlara üstün olduklarını iddia eden geleneksel söyleme karşı çıkar ve sel, küresel soğuma gibi kozmik güçlerin denetiminde olan insanların birbirinden üstün olmadığını ifade eder. Mevcut çalışma, yazarın romanlarında toplumsal konulara değinerek bilim kurgu türünü toplumsal farkındalık yaratmak amacıyla kullandığını göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır.
