AN ASSESSMENT OF THE NATURE OF THE RETRANSLATION ACTION AND THE FACTORS PREPARING THE GROUND FOR THIS ACTION

Abstract

The first part of our study, which is about retranslation and consists of three main parts, focuses on the nature of retranslation. The second part emphasises the factors determining this action and the translators' position in this process. In the last part, concrete examples of retranslation activities carried out in our target culture -in their fields- as a result of the retranslation activity are selected and presented. As a result of the research carried out within the framework of our study, the following primary findings have been reached: The act of retranslation has a complex structure as an action performed for different reasons. Therefore, all retranslation activities are carried out independently of each other. In this respect, the current definitions of retranslation in the translation studies literature should be re-evaluated and addressed. In addition, retranslation, which differs from the revision act in translation studies, is more subject than the act of a revision in the field. Various factors determine retranslation activities in this direction. However, publishing houses are generally involved in retranslation activities and instead lead such activities with commercial concerns. The act of retranslating can be done by the same translator who brought a source text to the target culture, or it can be done by a different translator(s). In this direction, the act of retranslation can have a multifaceted structure. As a result of our study, it has been concluded that the retranslation action, which has a multifaceted structure, cannot have general validity in terms of both its definition and the factors determining this action, that retranslation activities are carried out within a supply-demand balance, that these activities are a type of action that can be carried out continuously within the framework of a dynamic structure, and they are/should be the subject of many translation studies research.

YENİDEN ÇEVİRİ EYLEMİNİN DOĞASI VE BU EYLEME ZEMİN HAZIRLAYAN ETKENLER ÜZERİNE BİR DEĞERLENDİRME

Abstract

Çalışmamızın konusunu oluşturan yeniden çeviri eylemi, farklı gerekçelere bağlı olarak gerçekleştirilen bir eylem olup karmaşık bir yapıya sahiptir. Dolayısıyla tüm yeniden çeviri faaliyetleri birbirinden bağımsız bir biçimde gerçekleştirilmektedir. Bu yönüyle çeviribilim literatüründe ortaya konulmuş yeniden çeviri eylemine yönelik tanımlamalar, yeniden değerlendirilip ele alınmalıdır. Çeviribilim alanında yer verilen revizyon eyleminden farklılık gösteren yeniden çeviri eylemi, alanda revizyon eyleminden daha fazla konu edinmekte, bu doğrultuda yeniden çeviri faaliyetleri çeşitli etkenlerce belirlenmektedir. Bu hususların başında ise “düzeltme”, “yeniden yorumlama”, “güncelleme”, “dilsel açıdan geliştirme” ve “ekleme” gibi temel faktörler ve işlemler gelir. Bununla birlikte yayınevleri de yeniden çeviri faaliyetlerine müdahil olmakta ve daha ziyade ticari kaygılarla bu tür faaliyetlere öncülük etmektedir. Yeniden çeviri eylemi bir kaynak metni erek kültüre kazandıran aynı çevirmen tarafından yapılabileceği gibi, farklı çevirmen(ler) eliyle de gerçekleştirilebilir. Bu doğrultuda çalışmamız çerçevesinde erek kültürümüzde gerçekleştirilen yeniden çeviri eylemlerine yönelik kendi alanında yeniden çeviri faaliyeti neticesinde gündem oluşturan somut örnekler seçilerek ortaya konmuştur.
