The aim of this research is to examine the effect of the scientific literacy program based on metacognitive strategies on the metacognitive awareness of high school students. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental model with a pretest-posttest control group was used. The study group of the research consists of 54 students, 28 in the experimental group and 26 in the control group, studying in the 9th grade of a high school in the central district of a province in the Aegean region. The scientific literacy program based on metacognitive strategies was implemented for the students in the experimental group for two lessons per week for six weeks. No studies were conducted with the control group. Metacognitive Awareness Scale for Children - Form B and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools in the study. The data was analyzed using the independent samples t-test and the dependent samples t-test with SPSS 23 program. The research findings showed that there was no difference between the metacognitive awareness scale pre-tests of the students in the experimental and control groups, but there was a significant difference between the post-test scores. In addition, while there was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the control group, a significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group in favor of the post-test scores. The findings showed that the scientific literacy program based on metacognitive strategies increased the metacognitive awareness of high school students. It is thought that this research will be an example of application for the studies on metacognitive awareness.
