Logic, which regulates the rules of correct thinking, was systematized by Aristotle
and reached the present day. As known, there are two aspects of logic, the oretical and practical. The first is the detection of the way of thinking, which is
called “logical thinking”. In this sense, logic is regarded as ‘science’. The second
aspect is the exercising of this established science. In this sense, logic is regarded
as an art and technique (science). In this context, the reason for the debate of
“Is logic a science or an art?” is based on these two aspects. This debate has
continued for years.
It is said that Aristotle does not include logic in his science classification. The
idea that he regards logic as an instrument of indispensable and provable science
instead of seeing logic as a science is widespread. It is stated that this idea has
strong influence among the Islamic thinkers. In fact, when these two aspects of logic
are considered, it can be said that logic is an art because it has its own specific
issues and has a science and a methodology in itself.
Doğru düşünmenin kurallarını düzenleyen Mantık, Aristoteles tarafından sistemleştirilmiş
olup günümüze kadar ulaşmıştır. Bilindiği gibi Mantığın teorik ve
pratik olmak üzere iki yönü vardır. Bunlardan ilki mantıklı düşünme denen düşünme
tarzının tespitidir. Bu yönüyle mantık ‘bilim’ olarak kabul edilir. Diğeri ise onun
uygulanmasıdır. Bu yönüyle mantık, bir sanat ve teknik olarak kabul edilir. Mantık
bilim midir, sanat mıdır? diye yapılan tartışmaların sebebi bu iki yönlülükten
kaynaklanmaktadır. Bu tartışma yıllar boyunca devam etmiş ve günümüze değin
güncelliğini korumuştur. Aristoteles’in bilimler sınıflamasında mantık ilminin yer
almadığı söylenmektedir. Aristoteles’in, mantığı bilim olarak değil, zorunlu ve
pozitif bilimler için bir araç/âlet gördüğü genel olarak kabul görmektedir. İslâm
bilginlerinde de bu fikir ağırlıklı olarak görülmektedir. Aslında Mantığın bu iki
yönü düşünüldüğünde kendine özgü konularının olması hem kendi içinde bir bilim,
hem de metodoloji olması yönüyle bir sanat olduğu söylenebilir.
